Cancer rates on the rise

New figures collected by the Office of National Statistics reveal that new cases of cancer registered in England in 2010 was 136,372 - up 1,736 (1.3%) on 2009 – and 132,386 for females, an increase of 2,343 (1.8%).

The figures also show that the 3 most common forms of cancer for men are lung, colorectal and prostate, while breast, lung and colorectal are most common for women.

The charity Breast Cancer Campaign have said that the extra 999 cases of breast cancer in 2010 compared with 2009 represent a 6.3% rise since 2001.

Baroness Morgan, the charity’s campaign chief executive said the increase highlighted ”the need for more research into the most effective ways of preventing, diagnosing and treating breast cancer”.
